Chuba Akpom targets Nigeria debut after permanent Ipswich Town move
Former England youth international Chuba Akpom remains determined to earn a first senior appearance for Nigeria after securing a permanent move to newly promoted Ipswich Town.
The 30-year-old striker changed his international allegiance from England to Nigeria four years ago, but has yet to represent the Super Eagles at senior level. His progress has been affected by inconsistent form and an unsettled club career.
Akpom is now at Ipswich Town after moving from Ajax in the summer, and his representative believes the forward’s long-standing ambition of playing for Nigeria can still be realised.
“Akpom is of course available for Nigeria but he has to first and foremost be at his best level for his club in the English Premier League. I believe it will happen before the AFCON”, he said.
The representative did not set a specific goals target for Akpom, who developed through the academy system at English Premier League club Arsenal.
Instead, the focus is on allowing the striker to establish himself and enjoy a productive season with his new club. The representative said Akpom has enough experience to manage the pressure surrounding his international hopes.
“No pressure. He is experienced enough to take it onegameat a time. The idea is to have a good season”, he concluded.
Akpom’s switch to Nigeria was completed four years ago, ending his eligibility to pursue a senior international career with England. However, despite having represented England at youth level, he has not yet made his first appearance for Nigeria.
His latest move to Ipswich provides another opportunity to regain his form in the English Premier League and strengthen his case for selection. The club’s promotion means Akpom will now have the chance to compete at the highest level of English domestic football.
According to his representative, performing consistently for Ipswich must come before any expectation of a Nigeria call-up. A strong campaign could nevertheless put Akpom in contention before the next Africa Cup of Nations, referred to by his representative as the AFCON.
The striker came through Arsenal’s ranks before continuing his career elsewhere, including a spell at Ajax. His career has been described as unstable in recent years, while poor form has also contributed to his failure to make a senior Nigeria debut.
For now, Akpom’s international objective remains unchanged. His representative says the player is available to Nigeria, but must first demonstrate that he is operating at his best for Ipswich Town.
