Club Brugge line up West Ham’s Freddie Potts as Onyedika’s successor

Belgian champions Club Brugge have moved swiftly to secure a replacement for Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika, reaching an agreement with Premier League side West Ham United for the signing of English midfielder Freddie Potts.

According to transfer market expert Sacha Tavolieri, Club Brugge will pay around €12 million for the highly-rated 22-year-old, who has already approved the move and is expected to arrive at the club’s training camp to undergo his medical.

The transfer comes as Onyedika edges closer to completing a permanent switch to Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt, ending a successful three-year spell with the Belgian champions.

The Nigerian international has reportedly informed all parties of his desire to join the German club, paving the way for the transfer to be finalised in the coming days.

Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Eintracht Frankfurt have reached a full agreement with Club Brugge, with the Bundesliga side set to pay an initial €9 million, plus performance-related add-ons, for the Super Eagles midfielder.

Onyedika is expected to sign a long-term contract running until June 2031, with his medical scheduled to take place within the next 48 hours before the move is officially completed.

Club Brugge’s decision to move quickly for Potts underlines the importance of replacing one of their most influential midfielders before the new season begins.

The England youth international has impressed during his development at West Ham and is regarded as a technically gifted defensive midfielder capable of filling the void expected to be left by Onyedika’s departure.

Since joining Club Brugge from Danish side FC Midtjylland in 2022, Onyedika has established himself as one of the Belgian Pro League’s standout midfielders, helping the club to domestic success while earning recognition as one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers in Europe.

His anticipated move to Eintracht Frankfurt represents another significant step in his career, while Club Brugge will hope Potts can seamlessly inherit the midfield role vacated by the Super Eagles star.
