Coventry City Sign Nigeria Midfielder Frank Onyeka on Promotion-Linked Loan Deal

Coventry City have confirmed the signing of Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka from Premier League side Brentford, bolstering their squad as they push for promotion to the English top flight.
The Sky Blues announced the move in an official statement on Monday evening, revealing that Onyeka has joined the club on loan, with an obligation to make the transfer permanent should Coventry secure promotion to the Premier League.
The 28-year-old arrives at the CBS Arena after nearly four years with Brentford, having joined the Bees in the summer of 2021. During his time in West London, Onyeka made 87 appearances across all competitions, including 75 Premier League outings, and played a key role in the club’s rise and establishment in England’s top division.
Onyeka was part of the Brentford side that finished ninth in the 2022–23 Premier League season, the highest league finish in the club’s history, further underlining his experience at the highest level.
Prior to his move to England, the energetic midfielder enjoyed a highly successful spell in Denmark with FC Midtjylland, where he won two Danish Superliga titles, lifted the 2018–19 Danish Cup, and gained valuable European experience in both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League.
Last season, Onyeka continued to build top-flight pedigree during a loan spell with Bundesliga side Augsburg, making 31 appearances in Germany’s top division.
On the international stage, Onyeka has earned 41 caps for Nigeria and was a prominent member of the Super Eagles squad at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Nigeria finished third.
Speaking after completing the move, Onyeka expressed his delight at joining Coventry City and his determination to help the club achieve promotion.
“I’m very happy to be here,” he said. “I’m a strong midfielder, I’m a winner and I always want to fight for my teammates. My aim is to give 100 per cent, bring my experience and help the team get promoted to the Premier League and bring glory to the city again. I’m very excited to get going and I’m ready to give my all for Coventry.”
Onyeka will now work under head coach Frank Lampard, who took charge of the Sky Blues in November 2024. Since his appointment, Lampard has recorded 35 wins in 66 matches, and the addition of Onyeka could prove crucial as Coventry continue their bid for a return to the Premier League.
