Danny Rohl to decide Joe Aribo’s return as former Rangers striker weighs in

Former Rangers striker Gordon Dalziel has insisted that head coach Danny Röhl will have the final say on whether Joe Aribo makes a return to Ibrox amid speculation linking the midfielder with a move back to Glasgow.

Aribo, currently out of favour at Southampton, has been touted by some Rangers supporters as a potential January recruit. Dalziel, who spent four years with the Light Blues, believes familiarity could work in Aribo’s favour but stressed that the decision ultimately rests with the manager.

“Aribo knows the club,” Dalziel said on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard. “It’s under different ownership and a different manager, but he knows the supporters and the demands put on you when you play for a club the size of Rangers. It’s an interesting one.

“I don’t know if I can see it happening or not because I’ve not really heard anything going down that road. He was good at Rangers. He was a good player. But it just depends on how the manager going forward is going to play, if that’s the sort of player he wants in his squad and in his team.”

Röhl, speaking ahead of Rangers’ recent Europa League clash with Ferencváros, offered insight into his recruitment philosophy when asked about the January transfer window.

“Generally for me, it is about a balance. You need in some positions a good group of leaders,” he said.

“When I look back to my time in Munich and you have a core like David Alaba, Joshua Kimmich, Thomas Müller, Robert Lewandowski and Manuel Neuer, then this is a core. Around this core you can play with exciting young players.

“But it’s good in some phases of the season that you have this stability in some positions, and of course this is also what we are looking for. It’s about the balance.”

Rangers return to domestic action on Monday evening, when they host Hibernian at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership.
