David Ozoh targeting Nigeria call-up after permanent Derby County move
David Ozoh is aiming to earn a place in Nigeria’s senior national team after completing a permanent move from Crystal Palace to Derby County, according to OwnGoalNigeria.com.
The 21-year-old midfielder spent most of his career with Crystal Palace before joining Derby County on loan last season. His performances during that spell were considered strong enough to persuade the Championship club to make the move permanent.
Ozoh’s transfer represents his third successive summer move to Derby County. His first two spells at the club were season-long loans, while his latest switch has resulted in a five-year contract.
He made 47 appearances across those two loan periods, despite both spells being affected by injury. His form and contribution were sufficient for Derby County to offer him a long-term agreement after he declined to commit his future to Crystal Palace following pre-season.
The move has also removed the immediate uncertainty that previously affected his international prospects. Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle selected Ozoh in his squad for the Unity Cup, but the midfielder withdrew because his club situation had not been resolved.
With that issue now settled, Ozoh is expected to come into contention for a place in the Super Eagles squad from September onwards. However, his involvement in the upcoming matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau appears unlikely.
Chelle is still expected to monitor Ozoh’s performances for Derby County as he assesses his options for future Nigeria selections. The midfielder’s representatives have maintained contact with scouts working for the Nigerian coach and have kept them informed of Ozoh’s availability should he receive another call-up.
Ozoh’s immediate focus will therefore be on establishing himself at Derby County after making the move permanent. His previous appearances for the club, combined with the five-year commitment he has now signed, have given him a platform from which to press his case for international recognition.
The midfielder’s international ambition follows a period in which his club future remained unsettled. That uncertainty was the reason he opted out of the Unity Cup squad, despite being chosen by Chelle. His transfer to Derby County means he can now concentrate on his performances and leave the decision over a future Nigeria call-up to the national team staff.
For now, the fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau are not expected to bring Ozoh into the Super Eagles set-up. His performances will nevertheless be followed closely, with his representatives continuing their communication with the coach’s scouting network.
