Eagle tattoo and Family roots: Manuel Akanji reflects on his Nigerian heritage

Swiss international defender Manuel Akanji has opened up about his deep-rooted connection to Nigeria, proudly reflecting on how his dual heritage has shaped his life and career — both on and off the pitch.
Born in Wiesendangen, Switzerland to a Swiss mother and a Nigerian father, the Manchester City centre-back has never hidden his pride in his African roots, even while representing the Swiss national team on the international stage.
In a recent interview, Akanji spoke candidly about his cultural identity and the symbolic tattoo that keeps his Nigerian heritage close to his heart.
“This is the eagle, from the Nigerian national team, with the football under it. It’s something I carry with me,” Akanji said, referencing the ink on his left arm.
“Obviously, I play for the Swiss national team, but I’m still really proud of being Nigerian. I could only make one decision, but they are still with me all the way.”
Akanji also shared memories of visiting Nigeria during his younger years, though his professional commitments have made recent trips difficult.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve been back to Nigeria,” he admitted.
“It’s hard for me to go back because I don’t have a break in the winter, and summer is the rainy season — so you never really know what you’re going to get. But when I was young, I went there three or four times.”
The eagle tattoo is more than just a nod to the Nigerian national team — it’s a personal tribute to the values of strength, resilience, and pride instilled in him by his father’s homeland.
While Akanji continues to shine in Europe with Manchester City and Switzerland, his Nigerian heritage remains a constant source of identity and inspiration.
