Edwin Okon: Former Super Falcons coach to lead Ibom Angels promotion quest

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria’s 2014 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations winning coach, Edwin Okon has been named the new head coach of the second-tier Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Championship side, Ibom Angels.

The former Super Falcons coach was introduced as head coach of Ibom Angels FC on Tuesday after a stakeholder meeting, where the immediate past Rivers Angels manager was named technical adviser of the Uyo-based team.

The Uyo-based club, determined to bounce back from last season’s relegation, aims to make a strong comeback in the upcoming Nigeria Women’s Championship backed by a compelling charge from the Akwa Ibom State Youth Development and Sports Commissioner at a stakeholders meeting on Tuesday.

The most experienced coach in the NWFL brings a wealth of coaching experience to Ibom Angels, having previously served as the head coach of Rivers Angels where he won multiple NWFL titles plus FA cup successes.

With the Pride of Rivers, Okon won four FA Cup titles from 2012 to 2016.

He led the team to the maiden CAF Women’s Champions League in Egypt (2021) as the first Nigerian team to make it to the tournament.

At the national team level, he won the 2014 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with the Super Falcons.

He also led the U-20 women’s side to a fourth-place finish at 2012 FIFA World Cup.
