Egypt face must-win Super Falcons test in WAFCON 2026 quarter-final bid

Egypt head coach Mohamed Kamal says his team face a formidable challenge against Nigeria’s Super Falcons in their final Group C match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday night.

The Cleopatras need a convincing victory against the nine-time champions to keep their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals alive. Even then, Egypt will require other results to go their way if they are to progress from the group.

Egypt’s campaign has been a difficult one so far. They began with a heavy 6-0 defeat by Zambia before suffering another loss in their second match, going down 3-1 to Malawi.

Kamal has recognised the scale of the task facing his players against a Nigeria side widely regarded as one of the strongest teams in the tournament. He believes the Super Falcons’ quality and experience could prove decisive in the contest.

“Nigeria is a huge African football nation. The majority of their players play in the best clubs in the world. This level of experience makes all the difference,” Kamal was quoted by CAFonline.

Nigeria’s status as nine-time champions underlines the challenge for Egypt, who must produce a significant improvement after conceding nine goals across their opening two matches.

Despite the results, Kamal argues that the scorelines do not tell the full story of Egypt’s development. He says the team have established a clear approach and remain committed to building their style through possession and controlled play.

“We have our own playing identity. We want to build from the back, keep the ball and continue to play our football. Experience will come from facing the best African teams,” he added.

The Egypt coach also views the meeting with Nigeria as an opportunity for his players to gain valuable experience against leading opposition. His side’s remaining route to the knockout stage is narrow, but a strong performance and a convincing result would give them a chance of extending their tournament.

For Nigeria, the match provides an opportunity to underline their standing among the leading teams in the competition. For Egypt, it represents their final chance to respond to the defeats by Zambia and Malawi and keep their quarter-final hopes alive.

Kamal’s side must therefore combine attacking effectiveness with a much stronger defensive display if they are to overcome the Super Falcons and remain in contention when the group-stage results are settled.
