Ekong Commits 1% of Salary to Support Common Goal Initiative

Nigerian footballer and Super Eagles defender, William Troost-Ekong, has pledged to donate 1% of his salary to support Common Goal, a movement that aims to create positive change through football. Common Goal, powered by players and managers who contribute 1% of their income, supports high-impact football for good organisations worldwide.

With Ekong’s commitment, Common Goal now boasts 43 members, and the movement is on track to reach 100 players in 2018. In a media statement released by Completesportsnigeria.com, Ekong expressed his dedication to the cause, coinciding with Common Goal’s plan to donate €400,000 to address pressing social issues such as HIV/AIDS, gender inequality, and youth unemployment.

The Rio Olympics Bronze Medalist said, “Winning the bronze medal for Nigeria at the 2016 Olympics and qualifying for the World Cup were both massive moments for me. However, I’m hoping to surpass those achievements this summer at the World Cup.” Recognizing his role as a role model for children and football enthusiasts, Ekong emphasized the responsibility of players to make a positive impact on people’s lives. Having traveled extensively, he has witnessed firsthand the influence they wield.

Jurgen Griesbeck, the founder of Common Goal, expressed delight at Ekong’s decision to join the movement. Griesbeck praised Ekong not only for his exceptional skills on the field but also for his remarkable character. He highlighted the importance of players aligning with a shared vision and leveraging their status to create a better world.

Common Goal continues to garner support from footballers, demonstrating the growing recognition among athletes of their potential to effect positive change. By contributing a small fraction of their income, these players are making a significant difference in addressing social challenges worldwide. Ekong’s commitment is a testament to the power of football to transcend the game and make a lasting impact on communities in need.
