Falconets soar past Ghana in WAFU-B opener

Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team began their campaign at the 2025 WAFU-B Girls Cup in emphatic fashion, defeating holders Ghana 3–1 in Adjouhoun, Benin Republic, on Friday morning.

The Falconets took full control of the first half, thanks to an outstanding performance from Janet Akeremkwoei, who struck twice to put Nigeria firmly in the driver’s seat.

Akeremkwoei opened the scoring in the 37th minute from the penalty spot after Ghana’s defence was caught off guard. She then doubled the lead moments before halftime (45+1’) with a composed finish, pouncing on a loose ball and showing great pace to make it 2–0.

The Black Princesses fought back after the break and pulled one back in the 50th minute, reducing the deficit to 2–1 and setting up a tense second half.

However, Nigeria sealed victory late in the game when Favour Nkwocha fired home a stunning goal directly from a corner kick in the 88th minute, restoring the two-goal cushion and securing all three points for Moses Aduku’s side.

The Falconets will next face hosts Benin Republic as they look to maintain their perfect start in the competition’s new home-and-away format.
