South African Football Association President (SAFA) Dr Danny Jordaan has consoled the national U-17 Women’s team.

This came after a 5-1 aggregate win for their Nigerian counterparts over the Batswana on Saturday.

Goals from Harmony Chidi and Aishat Animashaun lifted Flamingos to 2-0 victory over South Africa in the return leg of 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers.

Jordaan said these qualifiers were a huge learning curve for the team.

“We feel for the players and all the members of the team after this disappointing result. But the gap between South Africa and Nigeria is closing,” Jordaan said as encapsulated by safa.net

”Congratulations to Nigeria for progressing to the next stage. But remember, 2031 is just six years from today. We are building a team for 2031 and many of our players will be 20/ 21 years old then.

”Today’s experience will be a huge benefit in the bigger scheme of things. Thank you to the HOD and the team for your determination and commitment, all the best,” the SAFA President said.

Nigeria will face either Botswana or Algeria in the deciding Third and final round of the qualifiers.

The Bankole Olowookere’s side have been a major participant at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

In 2022, they reached the semifinals and won bronze medal in India while United States of America (USA) ended heir campaign in 2024.
