Italian club Fiorentina has entered the race to sign Nigerian forward Henry Onyekuru, adding to the growing list of admirers that includes European powerhouses Barcelona and Manchester United, according to recent reports.
Onyekuru’s journey began when he joined Everton from Eupen last summer for a reported fee of £7 million, immediately being loaned out to Anderlecht. The 20-year-old Super Eagles forward has made a significant impact during his loan spell, scoring seven goals in 14 appearances, drawing attention from top-tier clubs across Europe.
Notably, scouts from Manchester United and Barcelona were reportedly present to witness Onyekuru in action against Mouscron last weekend, highlighting the rising star’s potential. The latest club to join the pursuit is Fiorentina, as reported by Italian outlet Calciomercato.
The Nigerian striker may face a pivotal decision regarding his future in the coming months. Everton, seeking an offensive boost, has been rumored to consider recalling him in January. Onyekuru fueled speculation about a potential return by sharing a picture on his Instagram account, tagging himself in Liverpool city center last month. When questioned about the image, he stated, “Yes, that’s right, and I’m waiting for something. That’s all I can say. I hope to be able to play there in January. Everton is happy with my start to the season, but we are not in January, and all my concentration is in Anderlecht.”
In addition to Fiorentina, Premier League sides Southampton and Stoke, along with Dutch giants Ajax and PSV Eindhoven, have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Onyekuru’s services. The talented forward, who recently made his Nigeria debut in a World Cup qualifier against Algeria, is now a contender for a spot in the squad for the upcoming Russia 2018 World Cup.
