Flying Eagles face Burkina Faso test for WAFU B title and AFCON place

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will face Burkina Faso’s Young Stallions in the final of the WAFU B U20 Championship on Sunday, with the match carrying both a regional title and qualification significance.

The contest in Yamoussoukro will decide which team joins hosts Ghana as the second representative from the WAFU B zone at next year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations finals.

Nigeria, the seven-time African champions, are also aiming to retain the trophy they won in Lome in October 2024. But before they can defend their regional crown, they must overcome a Burkina Faso side that already defeated them in the group stage of this year’s competition.

The Young Stallions won that earlier meeting 2-0, giving them a psychological advantage ahead of the first final between the two nations in the competition. The previous encounters between the Flying Eagles and Burkina Faso had all taken place during the group stage.

The teams first met in 2022 in Niger Republic, where they played out a 2-2 draw. Their next meeting came in Lome in 2024, when Burkina Faso claimed a narrow 1-0 victory.

Sunday’s final therefore offers Nigeria the chance to respond to two successive setbacks against the Young Stallions, while also securing a place in the Africa U20 Cup of Nations finals and adding another WAFU B title to their record.

Flying Eagles head coach Abdu Maikaba believes the earlier defeat will help his players prepare more effectively for the decisive encounter. Having already faced Burkina Faso in the tournament, Nigeria have a clearer understanding of the opponents’ approach, according to their coach.

“I think this is an opportunity for us to redeem ourselves having lost to Burkina Faso in the group stage. Having played them before, we now have an idea of their shape and structure and we are working on how to capitalize on their weaknesses, while also consolidating on our own strength.”

The final will be played at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, with kick-off scheduled for 7pm on Sunday.

For the Flying Eagles, the match represents an opportunity to retain their WAFU B U20 Championship crown, erase the disappointment of the group-stage result and secure qualification for next year’s continental finals. Burkina Faso, meanwhile, will seek to complete a second victory over Nigeria in the same tournament and claim the regional trophy for themselves.
