Former Nigeria defender Ayisat Yusuf has been appointed Head Coach of GirlPower United Afghans, a pioneering refugee women’s football team, as they gear up to compete in the United Summer Tournament in Zurich, Switzerland.

Yusuf, who had a decorated playing career with top Nigerian clubs including Nasarawa Amazons, Delta Queens, and Rivers Angels, as well as Finnish side NiceFutis, brings a wealth of international experience to her new coaching role.

Taking to social media to share the news, Yusuf expressed her excitement: “I have been appointed as Head Coach of GirlPower United Afghans competing in the prestigious United Summer Camp Tournament in Zurich.”

The GirlPower United Afghans initiative is part of GirlPower United, an organization focused on the empowerment, integration, and development of refugee women and girls through mentoring, education, and sports.

The team’s participation in the Zurich tournament symbolizes much more than competition—it represents resilience, hope, and the transformative power of football.

Yusuf’s appointment is not only a personal milestone but also a powerful statement on the importance of representation and leadership for women in sports, particularly those from marginalized communities.

Her leadership is expected to inspire a new generation of young female athletes—both on and off the pitch.

With her deep-rooted passion for the game and commitment to social impact, Yusuf is poised to make a lasting difference in the lives of her players and the broader mission of GirlPower United.
