Franco Mastantuono says move to Fiorentina ‘changed my life’ in apparent Real Madrid message
Franco Mastantuono has described his move to Italy as a turning point in his career and life, in comments that appeared to underline the contrast between his experience at Fiorentina and his difficult period with Real Madrid.
The 19-year-old Argentina international joined Fiorentina on loan from Real Madrid last summer after a challenging spell in the Spanish capital. Since arriving in Florence, Mastantuono has rediscovered the form that established him as one of South America’s leading young talents.
Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone after Argentina’s victory over Bolivia, Mastantuono said he had found a greater sense of comfort since moving to Serie A.
“I feel great since I went to Italy and it changed my life a little,” he said. “I feel very comfortable and have enjoyed it a lot.”
He added: “Changing the environment was great for me.”
Mastantuono’s remarks appeared to indicate the difference he had experienced between the pressure surrounding him in Madrid and the stability he has found in Italy. The midfielder remains under contract with Real Madrid despite his loan move to Fiorentina.
The youngster also expressed his appreciation for Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni, saying the coach had helped him regain confidence with the national team.
“Scaloni gives me a lot of freedom to play, and I am grateful for that,” Mastantuono said.
The player also spoke openly about the disappointment of being left out of Argentina’s squad for the last World Cup. He acknowledged that missing out had been painful, while praising his team-mates and the national side’s performance in the tournament.
“It is difficult not to be called up, but I have always supported my team-mates and Argentina to give their best,” he said. “They put in an amazing performance at the World Cup and made all Argentines proud.”
Mastantuono ended his comments by suggesting he was focused on making the most of a fresh opportunity with the national team.
“A new stage is beginning,” he said. “I feel good and I may get an opportunity, but above all, I want to work with the national team.”
