Genk confirm Yira Sor will leave as Nigeria winger nears Amedspor move
Genk head coach Jess Thorup has confirmed that Nigeria international Yira Sor is set to leave the Belgian club this summer, with the winger reportedly already in Turkey to complete a medical ahead of a proposed move to newly promoted Amedspor.
Sor has been absent from Genk’s training camp in recent days, and Thorup said the 26-year-old will not remain with the club for the coming season.
“I don’t know if everything has been signed yet, but I can be honest enough to say that Yira hasn’t been at the club for the past two days. He won’t be with us this season,” Thorup told HLN.
Sor is strongly linked with a transfer to Amedspor, who have recently secured promotion in Turkey. He is expected to undergo his medical before signing a contract with the club, although Thorup indicated that the move had not yet been formally completed.
The winger joined Genk from Czech First Division club Slavia Prague in January 2023 for a reported fee of €6.5m. However, he has found it difficult to fulfil expectations during his time in Belgium.
His progress at Genk has been affected by injuries, limiting his opportunities to establish himself at the club. Sor has now entered the final year of his contract, with his departure set to bring an end to a spell that has not developed as anticipated.
Thorup’s comments provide the clearest indication yet that Sor’s future lies away from Genk. Although the coach said he could not confirm whether all the paperwork had been signed, he confirmed that the player had already been away from the club for two days and would not be part of the squad this season.
Sor began his professional career with Slavia Prague before earning his move to Genk. His performances in the Czech First Division led the Belgian club to invest €6.5m in his services, but injuries have disrupted his development since arriving in January 2023.
At international level, Sor has made one senior appearance for Nigeria. He is now expected to continue his career in Turkey, with Amedspor the club reportedly poised to secure his signature.
The proposed transfer remains subject to the medical and completion of the contract, but the announcement from Thorup suggests Sor’s departure from Genk is close.
