Ghana 2023 WAFU-B U20 Women’s Cup: Falconets to depart Nigeria May 18

The Nigeria U20 team will leave the shores of Nigeria for the inaugural Wafu B U20 Women’s Cup in Kumasi, Ghana on Thursday May 18.
The Super Falconets are among the eight teams listed to participate in the maiden women’s Wafu B U20 Cup and the Falconets had a remarkable camping in Abuja, with four wins out of four matches played at the FIFA Goal Project.
Over 30 players were first invited to the team’s camp in Abuja since May 1 before Coach Christopher Danjuma picked his final 20 players list for the regional tournament, celebrating a 5-1 win over Abuja U15 boys, and 3-0 victory over Josiah Queens before a 10-0 and 6-1 thrashing of Paul E Queens and Imo Strikers respectively.
Five players from the 2022 U17 FIFA Women’s World Cup bronze winning team made the squad for the regional showpiece, including Opeyemi Ajakaye, Aminat Bello, Taiwo Afolabi, Comfort Folorunsho and Blessing Emmanuel.
The Falconets will challenge Burkina Faso, Togo and Niger Republic in group B of the Wafu-B U20 Women’s Cup.
They will opening their campaign against Niger Republic on Sunday, 21 May before playing Togo on 24 May, also at the Baba Yara Stadium, before trading tackles with Burkina Faso Paa Joe Stadium on Sunday, 28 May.
The Nigerians secured a last-eight finish at the 2022 U20 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica and Danjuma’s side will be hoping to clinch the silverware following their success at the 2019 African Games in Morocco.
