As the game of women’s football continues to gain prominence across the globe, the President of the world football governing body, FIFA, Gianni Infantino has advocated for more development plans.
Some countries are yet to have a women’s football league or national team, especially the Arab Nations.
With Saudi Arabia recently birthed their women’s national team and Women’s Premier League in the bid to make an appearance at the Women’s World Cup in the future. Same as Morocco reaching the final of the last Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and also made it to the Round of 16 of their maiden FIFA Women’s World Cup.
During the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Extraordinary Congress, President Infantino made a clear appeal to Women’s football development as he expects the development to spread to other parts of the world.
He said: “We’ve been discussing as well about the (FIFA) Women’s World Cup, the next one in 2027. My appeal, again, to all of you is: to invest in the women’s game.
“It is definitely the future. We’ve seen it, we continue to see it. I want every country in the world to have a women’s league, to have a women’s national team.
“It is fundamental because women represent 50% of the world population, also in Asia and all corners of the world and we need to foster women’s football development.” He concluded.
He also hopes the extension of the number of teams at the Women’s World Cup will make it possible for more teams to participate in the tournament especially those that are putting a lot into the development of women’s football.
