Gift Orban suffers online racial abuse for Gent miss against Standard Liege

Gift Orban came under horrible racial abuse online after his effort from the centre circle which crashed against the crossbar in Gent 2-1 victory over Standard Liege on Saturday night in the UEFA Europa Conference League playoffs.
Orban finished off a wonderful pass from Hugo Cuypers to open the scoring just after the half-hour mark, increasing his tally to 11 goals in 11 matches for Gent in the Belgian Jupiler since he joined the club in January 2023.

The 20-year-old almost scored a spectacular second goal direct from kick-off as the second half whistle blown, trying to catch Bodart out but was denied by the crossbar.
Meanwhile, Gent have formally complained to the relevant authorities for a proper investigation and verdict.
Comments like ‘give him a banana’ and ‘black bag’ were posted to a Twitter post by TV rights holder Eleven Sports.
The rights holder did his duty and blocked the accounts behind this, and the club said: “These distasteful reactions have been reported to the relevant authorities. A complaint will also be made to the police.”
