Governor Obaseki congratulates Edo Queens on WAFU-B Champions League triumph

The Executive Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki has praised the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership winners, Edo Queens after emerging as the champions of the 2024 West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League.

The Benin City based side defeated Ainonvi from Benin Republic 3-0 in the final match which qualified them for the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League on Friday.

While alluding to the investment of the state in the team especially equal pay with their men’s counterparts, Bendel Insurance, the Governor asserted that Edo Queens has proven that such investment was not a waste.

“I congratulate our darling ladies for their superlative performance, emerging champions of the CAF Women’s League WAFU Zone B qualifiers. They gave a good account of themselves and have kept to their promise of making us proud,” Obaseki posted on his X handle.

“Over the past eight years, we have committed to raising the bar in ensuring equal pay with their male counterparts to serve as motivation. The have proven that we didn’t make the wrong decision.

“This is their first sub-continental championship and they have put up a good showing. It is indeed a sign of greater things to come.”

He urged the team to replicate similar feat at the CAF Women’s Champions League.

“I commend the team for their well-deserved victory. I urge them to continue with the brilliant form and proceeded to replicate their impressive feat at the CAF Women’s Champions League, he concluded”

Having emerged the second zonal champions from Nigeria, Edo Queens will now seek to become the first Nigerian club to win the CAF Women’s Champions League later this year.

Bayelsa Queens recorded the country’s best outing in 2022 with a third place finish at the CAF Women’s Champions League.
