Hamburg boss Polzin says Terem Moffi still has more to give despite recent goals
Hamburg head coach Merlin Polzin has urged Terem Moffi to continue improving, saying the Super Eagles forward is still some way from reaching the level he believes he can achieve.
The 27-year-old striker has found the net in each of his past two appearances for Hamburg, starting against Eintracht Frankfurt in both the DFB-Pokal and the Bundesliga. Hamburg lost both games 3-1.
Moffi’s recent improvement follows a difficult start to the 2026-27 campaign, when persistent knee problems affected his fitness and restricted his opportunities in the starting line-up.
The former Nice forward has made nine appearances in all competitions this season, scoring three goals. Two of those goals have come in eight Bundesliga matches, while the other was scored in the German Cup.
Polzin said the goals against Eintracht Frankfurt had helped Moffi rebuild his confidence and settle more effectively into Hamburg’s attacking structure.
“Terem regains his confidence in the game through the goals you naturally need as a player,” Polzin said, as quoted by Ligainsider.
The Hamburg manager was encouraged by Moffi’s progress but believes the striker has not yet produced the performances expected of him. He also stressed that the forward himself is still aiming to reach a higher standard.
“He’s certainly not yet at the 100 percent I envision, and the 100 percent he envisions,” Polzin added.
Polzin said Moffi’s development remained an ongoing process and that Hamburg continued to expect more from the Nigeria international.
“If you ask me about this process: we’re still right in the middle of it and definitely not yet at the end of what I expect from him,” he said.
Moffi will have another chance to build on his recent scoring form when Hamburg host Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga on Friday.
His latest goals have strengthened his case for a regular starting place, but Polzin’s comments indicate that the forward must maintain his progress if he is to secure a more prominent role in the team.
