“I’m not going to throw myself in there” — Samson Siasia on Super Eagles job
By Monsurah Olatunji
Former Nigeria coach Samson Siasia, who recently completed his ban, is eager to return to coaching, particularly with the Super Eagles currently without a permanent head coach following Finidi George’s resignation.
Siasia, a former international player and coach, was previously banned for life by FIFA due to an investigation into attempted match-fixing. However, in 2021, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reduced the ban to five years, allowing him to return to football.
Siasia’s coaching credentials are well-established. He led the Nigeria U23 team to silver at the 2008 Olympic Games and guided the U20 and U23 teams to silver medals at the 2005 World Cup and the 2008 Olympics. Although he failed to secure qualification for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), his contributions to Nigerian football are widely recognized.
In a recent interview with Lagos Talks, Siasia expressed his interest in the Super Eagles’ vacant position but stressed the importance of careful consideration and planning.
“I understand the situation we’re in, but I need to negotiate. I don’t want to rush into the role without proper discussions because it’s a very challenging situation,” Siasia said.
“Nigerians expect victories, but winning requires a well-prepared team and effective planning.”
He continued, “There must be ongoing discussions and compromises to find a common ground. I’m not just going to throw myself into the job.
“The Super Eagles’ position is important, but it’s not the only opportunity available. I want to win, but it must be done in the right way, with proper planning from both sides.”
