Former Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel believes Unai Emery has the experience and tactical ability to restore Manchester United if the club decides to abandon its current direction.

Mikel says the Aston Villa manager has shown he can rebuild teams and remain competitive under intense pressure, qualities he believes would make Emery a potential option at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have continued to search for consistency, with growing frustration among supporters. Mikel acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing the club but suggested its hierarchy could consider Emery if it decides a fresh start is needed.

The former Chelsea midfielder also reflected on Emery’s time at Arsenal, where he succeeded Arsene Wenger. Mikel said replacing Wenger brought major expectations and came while the club was undergoing a significant transition.

However, he believes Emery has grown as a manager since that period. His work at Villarreal and subsequent progress with Aston Villa have, in Mikel’s view, demonstrated an ability to adapt and build competitive sides in demanding circumstances.

Emery’s work at Villa has drawn particular praise after the club underwent a substantial squad overhaul during the summer. Morgan Rogers left for Chelsea, Ezri Konsa moved to Arsenal and Youri Tielemans joined Manchester United, while several other established players also departed.

Villa recruited new players as Emery began reshaping the team, but Mikel says the manager has still managed to keep the side competitive over successive seasons.

“What he’s done with this Aston Villa team, it’s brilliant. It’s amazing to see what Unai Emery is doing season after season,” Mikel said.

He pointed to the extent of the changes at Villa, saying many observers expected the club to struggle after losing players who had been central to the team for several campaigns.

Mikel regards Emery’s record of managing such upheaval as evidence that he could cope with the demands of rebuilding Manchester United. His experience of working through difficult transitions is central to the former midfielder’s belief that the Spaniard could help restore stability at Old Trafford.

Any potential appointment would depend on Manchester United’s decisions and on Emery’s own ambitions. For now, Mikel’s comments identify the Aston Villa manager as one of the candidates he believes could withstand the pressure associated with reviving the club’s fortunes.
