John Obi Mikel criticizes players of African descent for choosing non-African nations

In the wake of a recent controversy involving Chelsea player Enzo Fernandez and French players of African descent, former Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has expressed strong criticism towards players of African descent who opt to represent non-African countries.
Mikel highlighted the trend of some players resorting to representing Nigeria only after unsuccessful attempts to play for their countries of birth.
A notable example is Shola Ameobi, who, after being overlooked by England following his U20 appearances, turned to Nigeria at age 32, scoring twice in 10 appearances from 2012 to 2014.
The ex-Chelsea star observed that the current Super Eagles team also includes several players who chose to represent Nigeria after failed attempts with their other nationalities.
Having served Nigeria with dedication, representing the country at U17, U20, and U23 levels before graduating to the senior team and playing 91 matches from 2005 to 2019, Mikel emphasized the importance of genuine patriotism.
“They want to play for England, France, whatever it is, and then they wait. When they get to 25 or 26 and they don’t get a call up from England, then they call Nigeria,” Mikel said on his ObiOne Podcast.
“We shouldn’t be treated as second options. You should be proud of your African roots, and you should be proud to represent your African country.
“If you decide you want to play for England, stick to it. Sit and wait, but don’t wait till 29 or 30, you’ve passed your best, then you’re like ‘Oh, Nigerian FA, I’m ready to play for you now’, no, f–k off mate.”
