John Obi Mikel draws comparison between Morata and Osimhen’s potential Chelsea move

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has assured fans that Alvaro Morata’s underwhelming stint at the club will not affect Victor Osimhen’s potential decision to join Chelsea.

Morata arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2017 for a £60m fee from Real Madrid but struggled to live up to expectations, scoring just 24 goals and providing six assists in 72 appearances across all competitions.

His time at Chelsea was seen as disappointing, and he eventually moved on to join Atlético Madrid and, more recently, Galatasaray.

With Chelsea reportedly looking to offload Christopher Nkunku in the upcoming summer transfer window, Osimhen is once again a player being closely linked with a move to the Blues.

The Nigerian forward has been in outstanding form for Galatasaray, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists in 24 games across all competitions this season.

Despite Morata’s struggles in London, Mikel is confident that Osimhen’s decision won’t be swayed by the Spaniard’s time at Chelsea.

Mikel, who shares a close relationship with Osimhen, even made a recent trip to Istanbul to visit the striker and try to convince him to move to Stamford Bridge.

“It’s always good to see these guys and see how they’re getting on,” Mikel said on the Obi One Podcast.

“Of course, Victor has moved to Galatasaray, and he’s banging in goals, doing what he knows how to do best. So, it’s nice to see how he’s settling in, and I’m still trying to get him to come to the club.

“I’m trying to press my buttons and see if we can get things done, hopefully, we never know.”

Mikel continued, “It didn’t go well for Morata at the club, but I’m sure Victor is a smart guy and he knows what’s good for him.”

Although the future remains uncertain, Mikel believes Osimhen’s decision will be based on what’s best for his career, and Morata’s Chelsea experience won’t influence him.

Only time will tell if Osimhen will make the high-profile move to Chelsea in the summer.
