Jose Peseiro applauds Victor Osimhen’s decision to stay at Napoli

Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, Jose Peseiro feels that Super Eagles striker’s decision to stay with Italia Serie A champions, Napoli was a good for the country.

Osimhen played a crucial role in ensuring that Napoli clinched the Scudetto last season. The former Lille forward received numerous offers from teams in Europe including two tempting offers from the Saudi Arabian club, Al Hilal.

His 26 goal contributions were key in the title-winning feat as he emerged as the league’s top goal scorer to the delight of Peseiro who is happy that the 24-year-old forward will be playing for Napoli this season.

“At first he thought about leaving, but then he decided to stay and do his best in Napoli. And I’m happy to see him still competing for big goals in Europe,” he told Italian news outlet, Gazzetta dello Sport.

“But Victor is very happy in Napoli. For his growth path, staying in Europe and showing off in the Champions League remains the best way. He is young and has time to prove his talent.

“Then I understand that in the face of certain offers, one can waver: two seasons in Arabia are worth more than ten in Europe, but money is not everything. Victor has improved a lot in Italy.”

Osimhen also emerged as the top goal scorer at the end of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers with ten goals.

He is expected to play a key role in the Super Eagles attack ahead of next year’s AFCON in Ivory Coast as the team searches for their fourth African title after triumphs in 1980, 1994, and 2013.
