Nigeria forward Josh Maja made the English Championship team of the week after scoring two goals on New Year’s Day.

The West Bromwich Albion player converted two goals to help the Baggies to a 3-1 success against Preston North End on Wednesday.

The win brightened his team’s chances of return to the English Premier League.

The goal took his tally to 12 with two assists as he is second on the goal scorers chart.

Sunderland goalkeeper, Anthony Patterson is also in the team of the week.

Other players who made the team are Shane Daffy (Norwich), Dunne Jimmy (QPR), Ryler Towler (Portsmouth), Josh Murphy (Portsmouth), Freddie Potts (Portsmouth), Colby Bishop (Sheffield Wednesday), Alex Robertson (Cardiff City), and Djeidi Gassama (Sheffield Wednesday).

Maja played youth football with Crystal Palace, Fulham, and Manchester City and began his professional career with Sunderland, making 49 appearances and scoring 18 goals.

In January 2019, he joined Bordeaux of France’s Ligue 1.

He later had loan spells at Fulham and Stoke City in 2021 and 2022, playing in the Premier League with the former.

After one season in Ligue 2, his Bordeaux contract expired in 2023 and he joined West Bromwich Albion.
