Former Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership champion Joy Jerry emerged the hero on Saturday, scoring the decisive goal to hand Yongchuan Chasha a crucial 1-0 victory over Chinese Women’s Super League leaders, Liaoning.
The Nigerian forward netted the winner in the 50th minute, opening her goal account for the season and propelling the bottom-placed side to only their second win of the campaign.
The result marks a major upset in the league standings and a vital boost in Yongchuan’s fight against relegation.
Jerry, who previously featured for Edo Queens and won the Nigerian league title with Bayelsa Queen, becomes the fourth Nigerian to score in the Chinese Women’s Super League this season, joining compatriots Macleans Chinonyerem, Juliet Bassey, and Folashade Ijamilusi, currently representing Nigeria at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Despite the loss, Liaoning remain top of the table with 27 points from 13 games, holding a narrow three-point lead over Jiangsu Suning.
Yongchuan Chashan, now on six points, will look to build on this momentum when they face Henan Songshan in their next fixture.
