By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria forward Joy Omewa was on target, but her Danish club Fortuna Hjorring crashed out of the 2025/26 UEFA Women’s Champions League following a 2-1 defeat to St. Pölten on Thursday.

Fortuna, who had already lost the first leg 3-1 faced an uphill task and quickly fell further behind when Jennifer Klein opened the scoring for the Austrian side in the 5th minute.

Kess Elmore doubled St. Pölten’s advantage in the 53rd minute, leaving the Danish champions with a tall mountain to climb.

Omewa gave her team a lifeline five minutes later, pulling one back in the 58th minute, but Fortuna could not mount a comeback.

The result confirmed their elimination, with St. Pölten advancing 5-2 on aggregate.

The victory sees St. Pölten continue their impressive European campaign, while Fortuna Hjorring bow out despite Omewa’s contribution.

They joined Arsenal, OL Lyonnes, Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona, Chelsea FC, Wolfsburg, PSG, Juventus, AS Roma, Real Madrid, Benfica, FC Twente, Paris FC, Athletico Madrid, Valerenga, Manchester United, and OH Leuven in the League Phase.

The draw for the league Phase is scheduled for Friday, September 19, 2025.
