In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, Leicester City’s U-21s, featuring Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho, emerged victorious in the Checkatrade Trophy, securing a 2-1 away win against League One club Scunthorpe in the second round of the 2017/2018 English Football League (EFL) Trophy.
Iheanacho, flanked by fellow senior Leicester players including Daniel Amartey, Yohan Benalouane, Aleksandar Dragović, and Leonardo Ulloa, showcased his prowess on the field. The game kicked off with a bang as Leicester’s George Thomas found the net in the third minute. Building on their momentum, the young talents doubled their lead in the 21st minute through Sam Hughes.
Scunthorpe managed to pull one back, with Kevin Van Veen scoring in the 46th minute, injecting renewed energy into the match. Despite Scunthorpe’s efforts, Leicester held their ground, securing a spot in the round of 16 with a 2-1 victory.
Iheanacho, eager to contribute to his team’s success, made a promising attempt to give Leicester an early lead just 20 seconds into the game. Although unable to convert Ulloa’s headed assist, Iheanacho demonstrated his goal-scoring instincts. Additionally, he nearly turned provider for Layton Ndukwu after Leicester went 2-0 up, showcasing his versatility on the field.
