In a positive turn of events for Mainz 05, Nigerian defender Leon Balogun has made a full recovery from the illness that sidelined him during the Super Eagles’ clash against Serbia at the Hive Stadium last Tuesday. The 29-year-old, a key player for Mainz, participated in a rigorous training session with his teammates on Friday, setting the stage for his potential inclusion in Sunday’s crucial Bundesliga clash against Borussia Monchengladbach.
Balogun’s return couldn’t come at a more opportune moment, considering the absence of Abdou Diallo, who is recuperating from a broken nose, according to Mainz manager Sandro Schwarz. Schwarz emphasized the importance of the upcoming match, stating, “Niko is a candidate to start on Sunday. Alexander Hack, Leon Balogun, or Jean-Philippe Gbamin are also in contention to replace Diallo.”
With a keen eye on the team’s position in the league table, Schwarz expressed the urgency for Mainz to secure a favorable outcome, asserting, “There are no more breaks from now on, just a very clear objective from week to week. Despite everything, we have the chance to climb up to 15th in the table.”
Reflecting on the international break, Schwarz acknowledged its significance, noting, “The international break gave us a well-needed break. We had the chance to breathe. Now we have seven games, as well as a possible pair of relegation games, ahead of us. We have to get better results, and we have to let our play do the talking on the pitch.”
Balogun, who has featured in 12 Bundesliga appearances this season, aims to contribute significantly to Mainz’s quest for survival as they currently occupy the 16th position in the table with 25 points from 27 games. The Mainz faithful eagerly anticipate his potential impact in the upcoming clash against Borussia Monchengladbach.
