Lookman scores as Atletico Madrid beat Manchester United but warns team must stay ready
Ademola Lookman says Atletico Madrid must remain focused after their 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League.
The Nigeria international came off the bench to score his side’s second goal on Tuesday, ending a recent run without a goal for both club and country. However, Lookman insisted the result could not allow Atletico Madrid to relax, with the team needing to maintain its standards in every fixture.
The Spanish side made a fast start at the expense of Manchester United. Pablo Barrios opened the scoring inside the first minute after being set up by Alex Baena, giving Atletico Madrid an early advantage.
Johnny Cardoso appeared to have added another before half-time, but his effort was disallowed. Manchester United’s task became more difficult in the second half when Leny Yoro was sent off in the 74th minute.
Lookman had entered the match three minutes earlier, replacing Julian Alvarez. He then doubled Atletico Madrid’s lead in the 79th minute to complete a significant win for the home side.
Speaking to CBS Sports Golazo, Lookman said the performance of his team-mates had made it easier for him to settle into the game after coming on.
“We know how big of a win that was for us. The guys put on a big performance before I went on. So, it was easy to come into the team and play,” he said.
The Super Eagles player also explained that he had tried to contribute in both areas of the pitch after his introduction, while acknowledging the importance of the result ahead of Atletico Madrid’s next fixture.
“I tried to help the team defensively and offensively when I had the energy. It’s a big win for us; it gives us confidence going into the next game. Game after game, we have to be ready.”
Lookman’s goal brought an end to his recent scoring difficulties for club and country, while Atletico Madrid secured a result that he described as a confidence boost. Despite the margin of victory and Manchester United’s dismissal, he stressed that his team must approach each subsequent match prepared to perform at a high level.
