Maikaba urges Nigeria’s Flying Eagles to cut out defensive errors before Ivory Coast semi-final

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles must improve their defensive organisation and maintain concentration when they face hosts Ivory Coast in the WAFU B U20 Tournament semi-final on Wednesday, head coach Abdu Maikaba says.

Nigeria reached the last four despite concerns over their defensive record. They have conceded four goals in two matches and kept only one clean sheet in the competition.

Maikaba used his pre-match press conference on Tuesday to highlight the need for his side to address the mistakes that have undermined their performances. The coach said he was particularly unhappy that Nigeria conceded two goals from similar situations in their previous match.

“We need to improve on our defensive approach to the game, most especially in our last game we conceded two goals from similar situations, and we are not happy about that,” Maikaba told reporters at the pre-match press conference.

The Flying Eagles head coach said his players had already been instructed on how to deal with the type of balls that led to the goals. However, he admitted that lapses in concentration during matches had allowed avoidable errors to occur.

“We have taught the players on how to defend such balls. Sometimes during the course of the game they do forget and make little mistakes which will cost us the game,” he added.

Maikaba said the team would work on correcting those problems before the semi-final, while also insisting that his players must remain focused for the full match against Ivory Coast.

“We will make sure that we address them very well and make sure they concentrate all through the game, and not make such silly mistakes in the semifinal stage,” he stated.

The coach’s comments put defensive discipline at the centre of Nigeria’s preparations for a match that will determine whether they reach the final of the WAFU B U20 Tournament.

The Flying Eagles have shown enough to progress to the semi-final stage, but their defensive lapses have left Maikaba with a clear area to resolve before they face the hosts. Conceding four times in their opening two matches has increased the importance of producing a more controlled display in the decisive fixture.

Ivory Coast will have home advantage in Wednesday’s encounter, and Nigeria will need to avoid the errors that have affected their previous performances. Maikaba’s team will therefore be expected to combine the qualities that carried them into the last four with greater defensive concentration and a more disciplined approach.

The Flying Eagles are now focused on securing a place in the final, but Maikaba has made it clear that cutting out simple mistakes will be essential to their hopes of overcoming Ivory Coast.
