Mainz 05 Manager Credits Ujah and De Jong for Heightened Squad Competitiveness
Mainz 05’s manager, Sandro Schwarz, has commended the impact of the recent signings of Nigerian striker Anthony Ujah and Dutch star Nigel De Jong, stating that they have significantly increased competition within the squad.
Ujah, who returned to Mainz from the Chinese Super League club Liaoning Hongyun in the January transfer window, signed a three-and-a-half-year contract, reinforcing the team until 2021. Although he has made two Bundesliga appearances since his return, he is yet to find the net.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of their upcoming Bundesliga clash against reigning champions Bayern Munich, Schwarz expressed contentment with the current squad dynamics. “The squad size is just right at the minute. There’s a lot of competition for places, especially with Ujah and De Jong now in the mix,” Schwarz commented.
As Mainz braces for the challenging fixture against Bayern Munich, Schwarz emphasized the reliance on home support to secure a positive result. Acknowledging Bayern’s formidable quality, he noted, “During the match, we will have to withstand a lot of pressure, but we’re hoping to create a special atmosphere in the stadium.”
Presently occupying the 15th position with 20 points, Mainz 05 is situated three points clear of the relegation playoff spot in the highly competitive 18-team Bundesliga table. The signings of Ujah and De Jong are anticipated to fortify Mainz’s position and enhance their competitiveness in the league.
