Mamelodi Sundowns replace Al Ahly at top of CAF African club rankings
Mamelodi Sundowns have overtaken Al Ahly to become Africa’s highest-ranked club ahead of the 2026-27 season, while Egyptian rivals Zamalek have moved up to sixth and remain outside the top five.
The new official rankings were announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after results from continental competitions over recent seasons were taken into account.
Al Ahly, the record winners of the CAF Champions League, dropped to second place on 66 points. Mamelodi Sundowns, who won the competition last season, lead the standings with 73 points.
Esperance Sportive de Tunis moved into third position on 58 points, one point ahead of Morocco’s RS Berkane, who continued their rise by reaching fourth place with 57 points.
Among the other Egyptian clubs, Zamalek climbed to sixth on 49 points after reaching last season’s CAF Confederation Cup final. Pyramids FC, who won the CAF Champions League the season before last, fell to seventh with 48 points.
Morocco’s AS FAR remained inside the top 10 in eighth place, while Sudanese club Al Hilal were ninth and Algeria’s CR Belouizdad completed the leading group in 10th.
