Manchester City step up pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Jennifer Echegini

Manchester City are intensifying their efforts to sign Nigeria international Jennifer Echegini from Paris Saint-Germain before the Women’s Super League transfer window closes tonight.

The WSL champions have already seen several offers rejected by the French club, but they remain determined to reach an agreement for the 25-year-old midfielder.

According to Guardian Sport women’s football writer Tom Garry, Manchester City are continuing to work on a deal for Echegini as the deadline approaches. Paris Saint-Germain are keen to retain the player, who has one year left on her contract.

Echegini has become an important member of the Paris Saint-Germain team since joining the club in 2024. Her performances have made her a key figure for the French side, despite the growing interest from England.

The Nigeria international also has previous experience of English football. During her youth career, she spent time with Charlton Athletic, Millwall and Arsenal.

She later moved to Italy for a season with Juventus, where she made 16 appearances and scored 10 goals. Echegini subsequently joined Paris Saint-Germain and has continued her development with the French club.

Her latest appearance came on Wednesday night, when she helped Paris Saint-Germain to a 5-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in a UEFA Women’s Champions League play-off tie.

Echegini provided an assist in that match, underlining her attacking contribution as Paris Saint-Germain advanced with a convincing result.

Manchester City’s interest comes as the club seek to complete the signing before the domestic transfer window shuts. Their previous proposals have not persuaded Paris Saint-Germain to part with the midfielder, while the French side’s desire to keep a player with a year remaining on her deal adds to the difficulty of the negotiations.

The move would represent a return to English football for Echegini, who was introduced to the game in England before establishing herself abroad with Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.

For now, the midfielder remains a Paris Saint-Germain player, but Manchester City are continuing their attempts to secure her signature before tonight’s deadline.
