Manchester United are monitoring Fulham defender Calvin Bassey as they assess options to strengthen their central defence before the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old Nigeria international has attracted attention after a series of consistent performances for Fulham this season. Despite the London club’s mixed results, Bassey has been among their more prominent performers and is now being watched by a number of clubs.

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United’s recruitment team have been impressed by the centre-back’s displays and are considering whether to pursue their interest. The club’s reported focus on Bassey comes after a difficult spell for their defence, with United conceding seven goals in their past two competitive matches.

They were beaten 4-1 by Como in the Champions League before suffering a 3-0 Premier League defeat by Bournemouth. Those results have increased scrutiny of Manchester United’s defensive options and raised further questions about the club’s long-term plans at centre-back under manager Michael Carrick.

United’s younger defenders, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, are still developing, while Harry Maguire is due to turn 34 in March and is entering the final year of his contract.

Lisandro Martinez is also approaching the last year of his current deal. Matthijs de Ligt, meanwhile, has only recently returned following an extended period out with injury, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the position.

Manchester United are not the only Premier League club believed to be interested in Bassey. Everton and Newcastle United are also reportedly tracking the former Ajax defender, creating the possibility of significant domestic competition for his signature.

Interest is also said to have come from outside England. Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are reportedly monitoring the Nigerian international’s situation, potentially making Bassey one of the more closely watched defenders ahead of the January window.

Bassey’s current contract with Fulham is scheduled to expire at the end of the season. However, the club hold an option to extend the agreement by another 12 months.

That clause could affect Fulham’s position in any negotiations, while the approaching end of the defender’s contract may give interested clubs the prospect of signing him for a reduced transfer fee.

With Manchester United, Everton, Newcastle United and several European clubs understood to be assessing his situation, Bassey’s future is likely to become a significant transfer storyline before the January window opens.
