Manchester United tracking Fulham defender Calvin Bassey as contract talks loom
Manchester United are monitoring Fulham and Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey as they assess their defensive options ahead of an extensive rebuild in 2027.
The 26-year-old is under contract until the summer of 2027, while Fulham have an option to extend the agreement by a further year. However, the club are reported to want new terms in place as interest from potential suitors increases.
TEAMtalk reported United’s interest, with the story relayed by Complete Sports on 30 October. The report said the club’s football department has been impressed by Bassey and is assessing him as part of its planning for the future.
Fulham are also understood to be keen to open discussions over a fresh contract. With rival clubs continuing to monitor the defender, the London club face a decision over how best to protect their position.
Interest from several clubs
Newcastle United, Everton, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig were also listed in the report as clubs watching Bassey.
The defender joined Fulham from Ajax in July 2023 and has been given the captain’s armband this season. He turns 27 in December and is capable of operating at either centre-back or left-back.
Earlier coverage by Soccernet on Bassey’s playing minutes for Fulham, along with its Carabao Cup preview, highlighted the importance he has assumed within the team.
Bassey’s versatility is a significant part of the interest surrounding him. His ability to play in two defensive positions, while offering a left-footed option, has increased his value to Fulham and could make him attractive to clubs seeking defensive reinforcements.
Contract timing could prove important
The current situation leaves Fulham with a choice over how to manage the final stages of Bassey’s contract. Extending the agreement would give the club greater control over the timing and terms of any potential transfer.
If negotiations do not progress, however, Bassey would move closer to the final year of his deal, a point at which interested clubs may find it easier to approach him.
There is no indication that any club has made a bid for the defender. The reports concern monitoring and interest rather than a formal transfer proposal.
For Nigeria, the attention reflects Bassey’s standing as a left-footed defender who can cover both centre-back and left-back. The next indication of Fulham’s intentions will be whether formal talks over a new contract begin before January.
