Mikel tipped Arsenal to win Premier League title, dismisses Chelsea’s chances

By Wale Mustapha

Former Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has picked Arsenal as the favorite to win this season’s English Premier League (EPL) title, dismissing the chances of his former club, Chelsea.

Mikel, who spent over a decade at Chelsea, has expressed doubts about his old club’s title credentials this season, despite their ongoing rebuilding efforts. Instead, he has tipped Arsenal—Chelsea’s city rivals—as the team to beat.

“The title is for Arsenal to lose this season,” Mikel said, highlighting their sensational form so far, which has seen them open a four-point gap at the top of the table.

Arsenal’s impressive start has placed them ahead of defending champions Manchester City and Liverpool, with the Gunners boasting a six-point lead over City and a seven-point advantage over Liverpool.

Mikel, who has previously criticized Chelsea’s mentality and downplayed their title chances, acknowledged that Arsenal’s squad depth makes them the strongest contenders.

“Martinelli coming off the bench, winning games. Eze is coming off the bench. They are winning games,” Mikel added during a recent episode of his podcast.

“Merino as well is injured. Havertz is injured. No Odegaard, no Gabriel Jesus. It’s frightening.”

He went on to praise Arsenal’s current squad, stating, “Yeah, the squad that Arsenal has got right now, and Mikel Arteta knows that. He knows that. He knows that this is Arsenal’s title to lose.”

Mikel’s endorsement of Arsenal’s title credentials marks a shift in his stance, acknowledging the Gunners’ strength and their potential to secure a first EPL title since 2004.
