Mohamed Salah’s Trabzonspor move overshadowed by Jabol-Folcarelli knee injury
Trabzonspor have confirmed that Tim Jabol-Folcarelli has undergone successful knee surgery and will be sidelined for a period, delivering an early blow to the Turkish club as attention focuses on the arrival of their most expensive signing, Mohamed Salah.
The young player was injured during one of Trabzonspor’s friendly matches as the team prepared for the new season. He subsequently developed swelling and severe pain in his right knee, prompting further medical tests.
Trabzonspor’s medical board chairman, Professor Dr Ahmet Besir, said an examination and magnetic resonance imaging scan had identified an injury to the lateral meniscus.
“Detailed medical examinations and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an injury to the lateral meniscus of the knee, which required immediate surgical intervention,” Besir said in a statement.
Jabol-Folcarelli underwent the operation at Acıbadem Fulya Hospital, Trabzonspor’s sponsor hospital. The procedure was performed by Dr Mustafa Sengun and was described by the club as completely successful.
The injured section of the meniscus was removed using arthroscopic surgery. Trabzonspor’s medical staff will now begin an intensive rehabilitation programme designed to prepare the player for a return to full team training as soon as possible.
The club have not given a specific timetable for his recovery. His absence nevertheless represents a significant concern at a delicate stage of the campaign, with the squad working towards the start of the new season and the Turkish football spotlight increasingly fixed on Trabzonspor.
The injury comes as the club celebrates a major development away from the treatment room: the transfer of Egypt forward Mohamed Salah. His move to Trabzonspor has attracted major attention in Turkey and internationally, and is expected to increase the competition’s commercial and sporting profile.
Salah’s arrival is also being presented as part of Trabzonspor’s ambition to restore the club to its former prominence. The excitement surrounding the Egyptian forward’s transfer has, however, been tempered by the news that one of the team’s prominent young players will begin the season recovering from surgery.
Trabzonspor must therefore manage two contrasting realities at the same time. The club are seeking to build momentum around the signing of Salah and their wider sporting ambitions, while their medical department faces the immediate task of overseeing Jabol-Folcarelli’s rehabilitation.
The successful operation removes the immediate need for further treatment, but the midfielder’s recovery and eventual return to collective training will now be closely monitored by the club. For Trabzonspor, the news provides relief over the outcome of the surgery but leaves the team dealing with an unwanted setback before competitive action begins.
