NFF launches second Coaches Educators Course to elevate African coaching standards

By Dayo Awoniyi
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has launched the second edition of its Coaches Educators Course, reinforcing its commitment to raising the standard of football coaching in Nigeria and across the continent.
With this move, Nigeria becomes only the sixth African country to implement such a transformative coaching education programme.
The launch ceremony took place on Thursday, July 17, 2025, in Abuja, and was presided over by NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi (MON), who emphasized the programme’s potential to reshape coaching philosophy and delivery at all levels of the game.
“We are pleased to host this course at this time, marking the second iteration of the programme,” Dr. Sanusi stated. “I was privileged to be part of the inaugural edition, and we recognize the critical importance of grooming elite coaches who can also serve as educators.”
He explained that coaching education goes beyond traditional coaching courses by incorporating scientific methods and pedagogical frameworks aimed at enhancing both teaching and learning processes.
“Coaching education transcends the framework of a standard coaching course,” he noted. “While coaching courses mainly address techniques and tactics, coaching education integrates diverse methodologies and focuses on effectively transferring that knowledge to future coaches.”
Participants will be evaluated at the end of the course. Those who excel will qualify for advanced-level coaching programmes, while others will be directed toward foundational ‘C’ and ‘D’ license pathways.
Dr. Sanusi stressed the importance of active participation, stating that future coaching educators must be capable of not just absorbing information but also delivering it effectively.
“I am confident the CAF instructor will cover all the critical areas,” he added. “The real measure of success will be reflected in changed attitudes and behaviors, and how effectively participants go on to apply and share what they’ve learned.”
The opening session drew notable figures from Nigerian football, including CAF Expert Michael Amenga; NFF Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen; Director of Finance and Administration Paulinus Anameje; Director of Legal Services Barr. Okey Obi; Deputy Director (Technical) Mrs. Faith Ben-Anuge; Head of Education Dr. Terry Eguaoje; and all fifteen selected coaching participants.
This initiative is part of the NFF’s broader strategy to build a sustainable football development ecosystem, ensuring that quality coaching trickles down from elite to grassroots levels, ultimately improving the game across Nigeria and beyond.
