Nigeria handed away tie against El Salvador in 2027 Davis Cup World Group II play-offs

Nigeria will travel to El Salvador for their 2027 Davis Cup World Group II play-off after the draw was made at the World Tennis offices in London.

The tie will take place between 5–7 February 2027, with El Salvador entitled to choose the exact dates within that period as the home nation.

The fixture gives Nigeria an immediate chance to return to World Group II after they were relegated from the competition’s second tier by Morocco earlier this month. Morocco completed a 4-0 victory in Rabat, sending Nigeria into the play-offs.

Nigeria had secured promotion to the 2026 World Group II competition in February, beating Uzbekistan 3-1 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.

Their return to the second tier proved difficult, however, as Morocco took control of the September tie on the opening day. Karim Bennani and Yassine Dlimi won the two singles matches to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.

Morocco then won the doubles rubber on Sunday before Amine Jamji defeated Michael Emmanuel in the reverse singles to seal the comprehensive victory.

The result earned Morocco a place in the 2027 World Group I Play-offs, while Nigeria were moved into the World Group II Play-offs.

El Salvador are seeded fifth for the play-offs, whereas Nigeria are one of the unseeded teams. The draw has therefore given the Nigerian side the added challenge of contesting the tie away from home.

The play-offs involve 26 countries across 13 ties. The 13 winners will progress to World Group II ties in September 2027. The nations defeated in February will instead take part in regional Group III events later that year.

Nigeria must now prepare for the conditions of playing on El Salvador’s home court as they seek to preserve their hopes of regaining their place in World Group II.

The tie will use a best-of-five-match format. Two singles matches will be played on the first day, followed by the doubles and two reverse singles on the second day. Every match will be decided by the best of three sets, with tie-breaks in use.

The February meeting will be Nigeria’s first opportunity to respond to the defeat by Morocco and continue their progress in international men’s team tennis.
