Nigeria U20 men’s national team have sealed their qualification to the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup in May after defeating Uganda 1-0 in the quarterfinal of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday.
The Flying Eagles finished second in group A to set up a last eight duel with group B toppers Uganda and an own goal in the 30th minute through a deflected shot was enough for the Nigerian side to see off the Ugandans.
The Ugandans dominated proceedings in the first 20 minutes and have several chances to take the lead including a header which was calmly saved by goalkeeper, Chijioke Aniagboso.
However, a counter attacking move saw the Flying Eagles take the lead in the 30th minute following a deflected shot that hit the goal post to hit the Ugandan defender and sailed the back of the net.
After a lone lead at the first half break, both sides showed willingness to get a goal in the second half but it was the Flying Eagles that had the clearest of chances despite the Ugandans dominating the game in all fronts.
The introduction of Olamilekan Adams into the foray gave the Nigeria side more bite in the attack.
The Ugandans tried getting the equalizer in the latter stages of the game but the formidable Nigeria defense stood firm to deny any late drama in the game.
With the win, the Flying Eagles are through to the semifinal of the U20 AFCON as the four semifinalists will represent Africa at the U20 FIFA World Cup in May.
