Nigeria revive U17 Women’s World Cup quarterfinal hopes with New Zealand rout

Nigeria kept alive their hopes of progressing from the group stage with a 4-0 emphatic victory over New Zealand in an FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup fixture at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Margao on Thursday.

The Flamingos had made a disappointing start to their campaign in India following a 2-1 defeat to Germany after surrending a goal first half lead against the European at the same venue.

In bid to revive their progression hopes, the Flamingos took the deserved lead with only 16th minute on the clock through Amina Bello thanks to an assist from Oluwatimininu Adeshina.

They went on in search of the second goal of the match and were rewarded through Miracle Usani after an assist from opening goalscorer Bello in the 34th minute to ensure a comfortable lead heading into half time.

In the second half, the Africans continued from where they left off in the first half but couldn’t find another breakthrough from numerous chances until the 75th minute when Bello assisted Taiwo Afolabi’s brilliant long strike.

Hopes for a comeback were dead and buried when Adeshina aided substitute Etim Edidiong to complete the rout.

The victory temporarily moved Nigeria to top of the table on three points from two matches, and left New Zealand, who are now with just no points from two matches on the brink of elimination from the competition.

Nigeria will hope to seal a quarterfinal place when they face Chile in their final group game on Monday, 17 October.
