Nigeria forward Taiwo Awoniyi has been nominated for August’s Premier League Player of the Month Award.
The 26-year-old forward netted three times in as many Premier League appearances, capping off his stellar month with an assist in Forest’s 1-0 triumph over Chelsea this past Saturday.
A record-breaking start to the season saw him equal a club-record streak of scoring for six consecutive matches at Forest. He also becomes the third African player in Premier League history to score in seven successive matches.
The former Union Berlin ace came off the bench to snatch a late goal against Arsenal and then continued his scoring spree by finding the net just three minutes into Forest’s 2-1 victory over Sheffield United.
The Super Eagles star netted in the pulsating 3-2 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford to join an exclusive list that has Mohamed Salah of Liverpool and Togo’s Emmanuel Adebayor as African players to score in seven consecutive Premier League matches.
He is joined by fellow African and Cameroon’s Mbeumo, who has taken over the mantle of leadership at Brentford following the suspension of star forward, Ivan Toney.
Other players who were also nominated for their impressive showing so far are James Maddison of Tottenham, Kaoru Mitoma of Brighton and Hove Albion, Manchester City’s Rodri, and West Ham United winger, Jarrod Bowen.
