Nigeria Women’s Football League top tiers get kickoff dates

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) have set tentative kickoff dates for the country’s two top divisions – Premiership and Championship for the 2023/2024 season.

According to the chairman, Nkechi Obi, the NWFL Premiership will kickoff on November 15 2023 and run till April 17 2024, while the title deciding Super Six will hold from 10 to 26 of May 2024 at a yet to be decided venue.

The NWFL Championship have also been fixed to start on February 13 and the promotional teams will be decided in the Super Six in June 6 to 13 2024.

This is the first time that the lower league will be getting its kickoff date known before the start of the season in the history of women’s football in Nigeria.

During the NWFL press conference in Abuja, Obi also revealed strategic plans are being put in place to ensure the leagues starts at it specified date and run smoothly without any hindrance.

She disclosed, 16 clubs will slug it out in the NWFL Premiership for the 2023/2024 season while 20 clubs will hammer it out in the Championship.

Delta Queens emerged champions of the last NWFL Premiership by defeating Bayelsa Queens 2-1 in the final of the Super Six in Asaba, while Dannaz Ladies, Remo Stars were promoted to the Premiership after topping their respective groups in the Championship.
