NNL Chairman George Aluo Applauds Referees at Super 8, Calls for Corporate Sponsorship

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Chairman of the Nigeria National League (NNL), George Aluo, has lauded the high standards of officiating and overall organization of the ongoing 2025 NNL Super 8 tournament at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, describing the competition as a showcase of Nigeria’s growing second-tier football quality.

Speaking to journalists, Aluo praised the competitiveness of the matches and the professionalism of referees, many of whom had been recognized during the regular season and handpicked for the Super 8.

“These young referees have done a great job. They were brought here to prove themselves again, and they have not disappointed,” Aluo said. “I believe they’ll maintain this standard till the final.”

He highlighted key fixtures such as Osun United vs. Crown FC and Warri Wolves vs. Kun Khalifat as examples of the tournament’s thrilling and unpredictable nature, adding that fans had been treated to consistent top-tier football.

Aluo also emphasized that the NNL’s current structure is building teams ready for top-flight success. He cited recent achievements by promoted clubs like Ikorodu City and Abakaliki FC as evidence that the NNL is a breeding ground for future NPFL contenders.

While acknowledging ongoing challenges in implementing reforms, Aluo pointed to progress in transparency measures like live streaming of matches and pre-season coaching education. He revealed that even NFF President Ibrahim Gusau has been following the games remotely, thanks to these advancements.

Calling on the private sector, Aluo made a direct appeal for corporate sponsorship, offering transparent funding models such as direct payments for referees’ indemnities.

“We’re not asking for money for ourselves,” he stressed. “If you want to sponsor, fund the referees directly. Let’s build this league together.”

The Super 8 continues through July 12, as clubs vie for promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League, with league officials focused on cementing a professional and transparent foundation for Nigerian football.
