NPFL legend Rabiu Ali reveals secret of career longevity after 44th birthday

By Saheed Afolabi
Kano Pillars legend Rabiu Ali, at 44 years old, continues to defy the typical expectations of age in football, remaining a key figure for the Sai Masu Gida in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
Ali has been a pivotal force in the club’s recent progress, and despite his long and illustrious career, he remains content with his journey, showing no signs of contemplating retirement anytime soon.
In a recent interview, Ali reflected on his career, emphasizing that he feels at peace with the path he has taken. He acknowledged that, while retirement is inevitable for all players, it’s not something currently on his mind.
“I’m enjoying my career and the game at the moment,” Ali told Complete Sports. “Life has been good to me as a footballer, and I believe I’m in the right place here at Kano Pillars.”
He further expressed his desire to continue contributing to both the club and the next generation of players, believing he still has valuable experience to share.
“Retirement? Well, that hasn’t crossed my mind yet. I’m still enjoying the game. I believe I still have more to offer both the game and the club, Kano Pillars. When the right time comes, at the right moment, I’ll retire, but for now, no, I’m not considering it.”
One key reason for Ali’s longevity in the game is his ability to avoid career-threatening injuries, which can derail even the most promising careers.
Ali appreciates this blessing and credits it, in part, to his disciplined lifestyle. He wisely advises younger players to be mindful of their habits both on and off the pitch.
“Aside from injuries, your lifestyle, on and off the pitch, plays a big role in how long or how far your career can go,” Ali explained. “Almighty Allah has been merciful to me. I haven’t had career-threatening injuries. Additionally, I avoid acts like drinking, smoking, and going after women. I’m content with what I have.”
Rabiu Ali’s dedication to his career and discipline is an inspiration to many, especially the younger generation of players, as he continues to be a central figure at Kano Pillars.
His story proves that with the right mindset and lifestyle, longevity in football is very much achievable.
