NWFL Premiership MD7 Wrap: Delta end Bayelsa run, Confluence bag third straight win

Delta Queens on Wednesday ended Bayelsa Queens’ unbeaten start to the 2022/2023 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership season with a 2-1 win over the defending champions in Yenegoa.
The Yenegoa-based side had only conceded a goal before the game after five games but went behind in the 51st minute thanks to Chinaza Agoh’s goal at the Samson Siasia Stadium.
Bayelsa Queens pushed for a leveler and the breakthrough eventually came with the equaliser via Igboamalu Chinyere in the 70th minute but Agoh’s second goal of the game late on settled the contest.
The triumph saw Delta Queens opened a five-point lead over Bayelsa Queens at the top of Group A with 16 points.
In Lagos, Robo Queens silenced Adamawa Queens to earn its second win of the campaign and first win on home soil.
Misturat Yusuf opened the scoring for the Lagos Landladies with a wonderful strike from outside the box in the 17th minute.
Esther Onyenezide doubled the host’s lead in the additional minutes of the first half after Ijeoma Obi had missed a penalty for Adamawa Queens.
On return from the recess, Substitute Rukayat Shobowale scored the third goal in the 52nd minute to seal the win with the Lagos-based side.
In Uyo, Chioma Moses’ first half strike propelled Confluence Queens to a 1-0 win over Ibom Angels. The result marked the third consecutive win for the Lokoja based side this season.
Nasarawa Amazons had to come from a goal down thanks to strikes from Ojiyovwi Kesiena and Abigail Sunday to secure a 2-1 win against Abia Angels which took the lead courtesy of Nkechi Agams’ early goal.
Two goals from Mary Lucky and Chizoba ensured a 2-0 victory for Heartland Queens over Osun Babes.
In Sapele, Royal Queens and former champions Rivers Angels settled for a goalless draw at the Sapele Stadium.
Behind Delta Queens on Group A table, Rivers Angels are second with (nine points), Heartland Queens (eight) on third, Naija Ratels FC (seven) on fourth, Royal Queens (four) on fifth, and rock-bottom Osun Babes (three).
Group B, Edo Queens tops with 12 points, followed by Abia Angels (10 points), Nasarawa Amazons (10 points), Confluence Queens (10 points), Adamawa Queens (nine), FC Robo Queens (seven points), and Ibom Angels (three).
The NWFL Premiership will now go on mid-season break until February 8 after the last transfer window for the season.
