By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
After his side’s 2-0 win over FC Robo Queens in the opening match of the 2022/2023 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six in Asaba, the coach of Rivers Angels, Okon Edwin sees every match as a final.
The Jewel of Rivers started the Super Six on a bright note on Tuesday as two goals from Chiamaka Okwuchukwu and substitute Adaobi Okah sealed a win for the Port Harcourt-based side at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State.
After silencing the Lagos Landladies, the longest-serving Nigerian top-flight coach is leaving no stone unturned in the quest to qualify for the finals.
“The girls were in high spirits. In every competition, the first match matters a lot. Every match to us is the final. We have crossed the first finals today,” Okon told journalists after the match.
“The playing turf is okay. The field is okay. It’s a mature side. The field doesn’t disturb anything at that level.
Every match as I said is a final to us. From the beginning to the end of the match is a final. We take every match very seriously at that level.”
Okon’s side with the win moved to the top of Group A ahead of Bayelsa Queens’ clash with FC Robo Queens on Wednesday.
Rivers Angels will face Bayelsa Queens on Friday to determine the group winners. The winner of Group A will face Group B winners in the final on Sunday, June 11, 2023.
In 2021, Okon led the team to the league title which qualified it for the WAFU-B Zonal Qualifiers where it finished in second place behind Hasaacas Ladies of Ghana.
They became the first team to represent Nigeria at the maiden CAF Women’s Champions League in Egypt in 2021.
